The program of FCT PhD Programmes aims to evaluate and select the most competitive research-based proposals. In the 2012 call (first call), 238 applications were submitted and 58 were recommended for funding, after peer-review by an international panel of experts. The PhD::SPACE has been approved in the 2012 call.
With the call for funding for FCT PhD Programmes, FCT aims to promote graduate training of the highest quality in Portugal and contribute to establishing close collaborations between higher education institutions (HEI), R&D Units and industry. Portuguese higher education institutions, overseas higher education institutions, overseas and Portuguese private or public research institutions (including research units, associated laboratories, state laboratories), industry and other private or public institutions with legal standing may apply to set up an FCT PhD Programme.
FCT PhD Programmes are expected to bring together higher education institutions (HEI), research institutions and industry (when relevant), to:
- Promote world-class graduate education and research-based training;
- Foster collaborations and sharing of resources between Portuguese institutions, to bolster the international quality and status of these institutions;
- Equip students with the necessary transferable skills to become excellent scientists as well as active members of the communities they may find themselves in.
FCT PhD Programmes include PhD Studentships, national or mixed. The fellowships also provide support for the tuition fees due at the degree awarding university. Supplementary support for courses may also be provided for laboratory rotations or other types of fieldwork deemed essential to the fulfilment of the aims of the Programme.
